Lens application and removal in airports and airplanes

Plan ahead

When flying with sclerals, especially if flights are long or there are connections, planning can be key.

Consider your needs at each stage of your journey.

  • How long is your flight?

  • Will you be working, watching TV, napping?

  • Do you need your sclerals in order to get from the airport into the plane and from the plane into the airport?

  • If your flight is delayed, how will that affect your needs?

  • Will you be passing through customs? If there are delays, will this affect when you want to remove (or apply) your lenses?

Handling your sclerals at the airport

Common concerns include:

  • Is there a suitable countertop in the restroom?

  • How do I avoid getting jostled if it is crowded?

  • Is the restroom clean enough?

  • Is there a restroom close to my gate, if I am planning to apply or remove my lenses just before boarding?

  • Will I need any assistance if I need to remove my sclerals before boarding?

Check the airport’s map online and look for a family bathroom where you will have more privacy and space.

A changing table is another possibility. Come prepared with disinfectant wipes and a towel.

Handling your sclerals in flight

Whether you can get comfortable removing or applying your sclerals in flight depends on how much experience you have with sclerals and how involved your normal procedure is.

Some travelers bring a kit and remove or apply their lenses at their seat. Others use the lavatory. Either way, a colored terry towel is very helpful in making your workspace safer.
