Is my lens too tight?

Need-to-knows about tight lenses

If you are confident that you are following proper technique for lens removal but you are consistently struggling to “break the seal” and/or you experience significant redness or pain after removal, keep this in mind:

  1. It’s possible the cause is a lens that is fitting too tightly.

  2. An overtight lens is a safety issue.

  3. An overtight lens may actually FEEL quite comfortable.

  4. When a lens FEELS comfortable, you are likely to wear it longer, leading to increased tightening.

Dry Eye Foundation is concerned, in general, about the numbers of people reporting adverse scleral lens experiences. Certain lens removal problems are a particularly acute concern to us because of the potential safety implications.

If you are experiencing any persistent issues during or after lens removal:

  1. Contact your provider and provide details.

  2. Schedule end-of-day appointments so that it will be possible for your provider to see you when your lenses have been in for several hours. After examining the fit, your provider can also remove the lens with a plunger themselves so that they can assess the suction.

  3. Read our article About Scleral Lens Providers.
